Waterproofing

chimneysaver-water-base-water-repellent-5gal_l According to the Brick Industry Association, chimneys require special attention and maintenance to prevent costly damage caused by water penetration. Because chimneys project above the roof line, they are vulnerable to the elements. Nearly every chimney you encounter has signs of water damage! The first step is to determine the cause and then find the best corrective measures. ChimneySaver, the first product developed specifically for chimneys, has been used successfully by leading chimney professionals for nearly 20 years. It reduces water penetration into the masonry by 99.9%, according to ASTM tests conducted at the University of Wyoming.water-sealers-vs-chimneysaver-water-repellentIt’s also 100% vapor permeable, which means it won’t trap water vapors that may pass through the bricks when the chimney is in use, unlike other products found in most hardware or home improvement stores. Those products when applied to a masonry chimney can actually slow down water vapors as they pass through the chimney leading to water damage.Whether to use Water-Base or Solvent-base
ChimneySaver is available in both solvent (mineral spirits) and water-based formulas. The water-based formula is most popular, however, if a water repellent has previously been applied to the masonry, we recommend the solvent-based formula.
Moisture from a variety of sources is always present in masonry and concrete. Sealers and silicone coatings form a water resistant surface film which trap water vapors inside. If these vapors cannot escape, they will contribute to spalling, scaling, deterioration, and freeze-thaw damage. ChimneySaver is 100% vapor permeable – a non film-forming water repellent that penetrates and lines masonry pores.

crack-and-joint-sealant-half-gal_l No water repellent can stop water from penetrating small holes and visible cracks! And because nearly every chimney has them, we developed CrackMagik, a unique, breathable, silicone elastomer. Think of it as a paintable caulk. Use it for sealing minor cracks (up to 1/8”) and defects in mortar joints where the mortar and chimney are otherwise sound. This allows you to easily correct these defects without the time and expense of tuckpointing. For best results, use CrackMagik after a ChimneySaver treatment. If using ChimneySaver Water-Base, CrackMagik can be applied immediately following application, while the chimney is still damp. If using ChimneySaver Solvent-Base, allow it to dry completely before applying CrackMagik. CrackMagik dries in about 6 hours to a cloudy (milky white) film that will not significantly change the chimney’s appearance.

masonrysaver-all-purpose-heavy-duty-water-repellent-5gal_l Formerly called MasonrySaver with SaltShield, this is the “Work Horse” product to use on horizontal concrete and masonry surfaces that are exposed to chlorides from road or sea salts. Whereas ChimneySaver works better on vertical masonry, this product works better on horizontal surfaces because of its optimized blend of modified siloxane and our unique “chloride screen,” SaltShield. DEFY All-Purpose Heavy-Duty Water Repellent is water-based and easy to use; simply apply to a clean dry surface with low pressure spray. It penetrates up to ¼” or more depending on the porosity of the surface.
pwr_l Save money by adding PWR to mortar/concrete mixes for all your repairs, tuckpointing, and rebuilds! Adding our Powdered Water Repellent (PWR) makes mortar/concrete permanently waterproof. This means no return trip to waterproof the chimney. When tuckpointing, just add PWR to your mortar mix. When the mortar is thumb print hard, (that’s when you can press your thumb into it and it won’t leave your thumb print) you can treat the chimney with ChimneySaver water base. PWR allows you to repair and waterproof the same day. It’s a powder that is mixed with dry mortar/concrete before adding water.
